My Day With Herb
Four days post-op and I was itching to get out of the house. Wisdom teeth freshly removed, my bloated face friend and I ventured out in search of some much needed sunshine. Thankfully I live in a town filled with splendid art exhibits, so I was bound to run into a soul feast. Today was more than filling.
One of my favorite fashion photographers and artists, Herb Ritts (1952-2002), is being honored at John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art through a beautifully curated exhibition of his work entitled LA Style. The beauty and simplicity of his photographic vision is beyond words. Seeing a piece of art in the flesh is more impacting than any online version. His life and legacy continues to inspire me.
Just across the hall you will find the exhibition of Venetian artist Paulo Veronese: A Master and his Workshop in Renaissance Venice. Veronese mastered the ability (among many others) to depict the true texture and sheen of period fabrics through his paintings. Ringling has specifically singled out the works that represent this technique. Look for those paintings with the placards labeled "Focus on Fashion and Fabrics" and read up fashion lovers. To plan the future, we must first know the past.
I love getting a double dose of sweet fashion education. Do you know where I can get my hands on a velvet covered steel chest plate? If so, drop me a line!
Herb Ritts: LA Style runs at The Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida until May 19th.
Every Monday the art museum is free to the public. Any student with a valid ID receives a discount. This even includes the onsite Starbucks, which is reason enough to go!
